The sleep cycle is an oscillation between the slow-wave and REM (paradoxical) phases of sleep. In humans, this cycle takes 1-2 hours. A good night's sleep consists of 5-6 complete sleep cycles.

During sleep, you usually go through five stages of sleep. Simplified, stages 1-2 are light sleep, 3-4 deep sleep, and 5 is REM sleep, also referred to as rapid eye movement sleep—the dream state.

  • The first is light sleep. During this stage, you drift in and out of sleep. Your eyes move slowly, your muscle activity is low, and you would be easy to wake up.
  • In the second stage, your body starts preparing for deep sleep. Your eye movements and brain waves slow down, your body temperature drops, and your heart rate slows down.
  • When you enter the third stage, you are in a deep sleep. Extremely slow brain waves called delta waves are intermixed with smaller, faster brain waves.
  • In stage four, you stay in a deep sleep and your brain almost exclusively produces the slow delta waves, guiding you towards the fifth stage.
  • You now enter the last stage, stage five, also called REM sleep. Your eyes are closed but they move rapidly from side to side due to the intense dream and brain activity you experience during this stage.

Brainwave speed is measured in Hertz (Hz) and relates to the number of cycles per second. A 5Hz brainwave is cycling at a rate of five times per second.Our brainwave activity reflects how we are feeling and what we are doing. If slower brainwaves are dominant, we might feel sleepy, very relaxed, or dreamy.

Brainwave entrainment methods like isochronic tones are used to stimulate and produce more brainwave activity of a specific frequency or range, making it more dominant. Delta Waves

0.5Hz-4Hz – Delta waves are very slow and low in frequency. You produce the most delta activity during your deepest sleep. During delta, your body does most of its healing and regenerating of cells.

Theta Waves
